Tree Selection and Breeding
Time: 0900 - 2100
This Field Day will be hosted by Scion geneticists who use a range of technologies to improve tree growth, form, resistance to pests and diseases and wood quality. These include seed and pollen collection; gene mapping and DNA fingerprinting; molecular breeding and genomic selection. Quantitative genetics is used to determine accurate breeding values and genetic gain predictions.Scion staff carry out field trials in their research nursery to assess the growth and wood properties of young trees before their germplasm is released to the forest industry.

The Field Day will visit native tree forests north of Auckland, with a particular focus on the iconic native Kauri tree. Kauri are rapid-growing in the early years and so could be commercially viable for timber production. Kauri are currently being challenged by Kauri dieback which is caused by Phytophthora agathidicida.
In addition to site visits, stops will be made at the Kauri Museum, Gumdiggers Café for lunch and TBC for dinner.

Te Puke Plant and Food Research
